The Most Hated Characters in Video Game History

The Most Hated Characters in Video Game History . Video games possess a unique narrative power that other mediums simply cannot replicate: interactivity. When we watch a movie, we are passive observers watching characters make mistakes on screen. When we play a video game, however, we are active participants. We invest hundreds of hours, endure brutal challenges, and bond deeply with the worlds we inhabit. Because of this personal investment, when a character frustrates us, betrays us, or repeatedly ruins our gameplay experience, the reaction isn’t just mild annoyance—it’s pure, burning hatred.

Over the decades, game developers have given us unforgettable heroes and tragic anti-heroes. But they have also created characters so intensely grating, despicable, or poorly designed that their names alone trigger immediate collective groans across the global gaming community. Whether through terrible writing, frustrating mechanics, or sheer moral bankruptcy, here are the most hated characters in video game history.

Preston Garvey – Fallout 4

Source Youtbe

Those five simple words are enough to send cold shivers down the spine of any Fallout 4 veteran. On paper, Preston Garvey should have been a beloved figure. He is the loyal, righteous senior officer of the Commonwealth Minutemen, a faction dedicated to protecting defenseless wastelanders and rebuilding society. He represents hope, selflessness, and order in a world consumed by nuclear chaos.

So, why does the community despise him?

The culprit is poor game design. Preston is the primary quest-giver for the Minutemen’s endless procedural, randomly generated “radiant” quests. The moment you walk anywhere near him, he relentlessly stacks your quest log with demands to rescue random, ungrateful settlers from raiders, ghouls, or super mutants. It doesn’t matter if you are in the middle of searching for your kidnapped son or confronting the main villain; Preston will interrupt you with a smile and mark another location on your map. Instead of feeling like the respected General of the Minutemen, Preston makes you feel like an unpaid, overworked errand boy.

Micah Bell – Red Dead Redemption 2

Unlike Preston Garvey, who is hated due to annoying quest mechanics, Micah Bell from Red Dead Redemption 2 is hated for precisely the reason Rockstar Games intended: he is a masterpiece of pure scum.

From the very first chapter of Arthur Morgan’s tragic story, Micah sets himself apart as a reckless, racist, sadistic, and volatile psychopath. He has zero loyalty to the Van der Linde gang, constantly sowing seeds of paranoia in the mind of the vulnerable leader, Dutch. Micah pushes the gang toward increasingly violent, poorly thought-out jobs, viewing human life—including his own allies—as entirely disposable.

What makes Micah truly wretched is his role as a snake in the grass. He manipulates Dutch, undermines Arthur’s honorable efforts to protect the gang, and ultimately acts as a rat for the Pinkertons. Watching Arthur’s health decline while Micah whispers poison into Dutch’s ear is one of the most painful narrative experiences in gaming. The sheer catharsis players felt at the end of the game’s epilogue proved just how effectively Rockstar succeeded in making Micah one of the most universally reviled villains ever written.

Abby Anderson – The Last of Us Part II

Abby Anderson is perhaps the most divisive and fiercely debated character in modern gaming history. When Naughty Dog released The Last of Us Part II, players were eager to continue the beloved journey of Joel and Ellie. Within the opening hours of the game, however, Abby delivered an unceremonious, brutal shock that permanently shattered the hearts of millions.

The decision to force players to play as Abby for nearly half the campaign—to walk in the shoes of the person who brutally ended a beloved hero’s story—was a massive narrative gamble. Naughty Dog attempted a complex moral lesson about the endless cycle of vengeance, empathy, and perspective.

For some players, the story worked brilliantly. But for a vast section of the fanbase, the initial trauma was simply too deep to forgive. Abby was viewed as an unlikable intruder forced upon them, someone whose motivations couldn’t override the emotional connection built with Joel over the previous game. Love her or hate her, Abby left an indelible mark on gaming culture as a symbol of intense player polarization.

Lester Crest – Grand Theft Auto V & GTA Online

In the single-player campaign of Grand Theft Auto V, Lester Crest is tolerable. He is the mastermind behind the major heists, a paranoid, highly intelligent hacker sitting in his dark room full of monitors. However, his transition into GTA Online transformed him into an absolute pest.

For years, Lester was the primary bottleneck for multiplayer progression. Every time a player logged into the game, Lester’s constant phone calls would break through the audio, completely interrupting whatever the player was doing. If you didn’t buy an expensive facility or start his specific heists, he would spam call you relentlessly.

Furthermore, Lester takes a massive cut from player earnings during hard-earned heists while offering patronizing commentary from the safety of his chair. Combined with his loud, obnoxious demeanor and high-pitched voice, Lester quickly became the most muted and avoided contact in the fictional state of San Andreas.

Ashley Graham – Resident Evil 4 (2005)

Before the excellent 2023 remake significantly improved her artificial intelligence and personality, the original 2005 version of Ashley Graham was the absolute bane of every action-horror fan’s existence.

As the US President’s daughter, Ashley must be escorted by Leon S. Kennedy through terrifying Spanish villages infested with parasitical cultists. The problem? Ashley possessed virtually no survival instincts. She had a habit of wandering directly into the path of enemy chainsaw swings, blocking Leon’s line of sight, and hiding in the worst possible spots.

Every time an enemy grabbed her, players were forced to endure her piercing, shrill, high-frequency scream: “LEON! HELP!”

Managing Ashley felt less like a thrilling survival mission and more like an agonizing, high-stakes babysitting simulator. Her fragile health bar and brainless pathfinding turned otherwise legendary action sequences into frustrating exercises in trial and error.

Todd Williams – Detroit: Become Human

In Quantic Dream’s cinematic adventure Detroit: Become Human, characters are designed to provoke strong emotional responses, but Todd Williams stands out as an irredeemable monster.

Todd is an unemployed, drug-addicted father living in a rundown home with his young daughter, Alice, and their caretaker android, Kara. Incapable of taking responsibility for his own failures in life, Todd turns his rage, substance abuse, and insecurity against those who cannot fight back. He routinely subjects Kara to verbal abuse and, most horrifically, physically assaults little Alice.

Watching Todd’s volatile outbursts creates a genuine sense of panic and helplessness in the player. There are no sympathetic qualities, tragic backstories, or redeeming arcs given to him—he is simply a bitter, abusive bully. The hatred players feel for Todd is driven by pure protective instincts, making the sequence where Kara finally breaks her programming to protect Alice one of the most satisfying moments in the story.

Morgana – Persona 5

Persona 5 is an incredible RPG, celebrated for its stylistic flair, deep turn-based combat, and memorable cast. Yet, despite his cute cat-like appearance and key role in the Phantom Thieves, Morgana managed to annoy millions of players due to a single, persistent gameplay restriction.

Morgana acts as the player’s primary guide and conscience during daily life in Tokyo. Because Persona 5 relies heavily on a strict time-management calendar system, players constantly want to use their evening hours to study, craft items, or hang out with friends. Enter Morgana.

At almost every turn, if the game’s script decides you have had a busy day, Morgana will strictly forbid you from leaving your room, hitting you with the infamous line: “You must be tired. Let’s go to sleep.” Being trapped in your own bedroom night after night by an overbearing cat-creature earned Morgana a reputation as gaming’s most controlling roommate.

Paimon – Genshin Impact

When exploring the vast, magical world of Teyvat in Genshin Impact, players are accompanied by Paimon, a floating, fairy-like companion who serves as the player character’s voice. Unfortunately, Paimon quickly transformed from a cute guide into an agonizing ordeal for many gamers.

The primary issue with Paimon is her voice design and writing. In English localizations especially, Paimon speaks in an extremely high-pitched, screeching tone and habitually refers to herself in the third person.

Beyond her voice, Paimon constantly ruins the pacing of the narrative. Whenever a dramatic, complex story moment occurs, Paimon immediately repeats the plot details in oversimplified, dumbed-down terms, treating the player like a child. Because the main protagonist rarely speaks, Paimon steals all the dialogue, constantly interrupting other characters and turning emotional cutscenes into grating monologues.

The Most Hated Characters in Video Game History – Conclusion

Whether caused by bad AI mechanics, persistent phone calls, or despicable moral choices, hated video game characters serve an important role. They bring the community together. There is a unique camaraderie in sharing the frustration of an interrupted quest line, a ruined stealth run, or a heart-wrenching betrayal.

While we may curse their names and wish they were written out of our favorite games, these characters prove just how deeply video games can touch our emotions—even if those emotions are pure, unadulterated rage.
